The girls of Year 3 and 4 transformed into well known characters from Roald Dahl last week to put on a superb performance of Revolting Rhymes.
Revolting Rhymes is a collection of Roald Dahl poems published in 1982. A parody of traditional folk tales in verse, Dahl gives a re-interpretation of six well-known fairy tales, featuring surprise endings in place of the traditional happily-ever-after.

Over 200 competitors entered the N.S.E.A. Show Jumping Qualifier at Northallerton Equestrian Centre on Saturday 14th February, and against some really strong opposition, the Queen Marys girls produced some great results in what proved to be a very long and tiring day.

The Junior team of Amelia Murray, Amy Bell, Tara Barker, and Jemima Sanderson, with Sophie Stephenson riding as an individual, started the day with aplomb, taking 2nd place in a strong field, thus qualifying themselves for the championships at Addington in October.

Three girls in S2 managed to secure a distinction in their Grade 8 LAMDA drama examinations. Anna, Ella and Flora took the Group Devising Drama exam last term, in which they had to select a newspaper headline and create a drama piece. “Deputy Mayor stuck in lift on royal visit” was the chosen headline with 3 people with dark histories being trapped together.

On Friday 23rd January, Queen Mary’s took 9 gymnasts from Year 7 and 8 to participate in the Hambleton and Richmondshire Area Gymnastics competition. As the girls were new to the event we were not sure what to expect. Dressed to impress in matching leotards the girls performed a floor routine that had to comprise of 6 skills chosen from an allocated list.

Print-Making with Local Artist Ian Scott-Massie

The workshop was in printmaking techniques and the girls designed several different types of monoprints, using inks and rollers to create their designs, printing from leaves, drawing on the reverse of the paper and drawing directly into the ink before printing it. Each process producing very different results – the girls enjoyed trying these techniques out and the unpredictability of the results made it more exciting.

Within the National news last week, there was a feature on the forest fires in Australia and how the koalas had been affected. As you may have seen, the poor Koala’s weren’t able to move away fast enough and therefore burnt their paws.  IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) were launching an appeal for members of the public to make mittens for the koalas to wear whilst their paws were healing.

Year 6 pupils spent a very worthwhile morning at Crucial Crew on the 19th November. Seven scenarios were set up, each one teaching pupils about staying safe and how to respond to emergencies. These included dealing with a river accident and dialling 999, attending a court hearing which focused on how alcohol affects judgement and gaining a criminal record.

The Year 3 girls have been busy taking part in a construction challenge within Design Technology. Whilst looking at famous landmarks such as the Burj Khalifa in Dubai and The Shard in London, the children looked at the design of these fantastic structures, for shape and size ideas, before starting to create their own masterpieces! Queen Mary's Equestrian Team in National School Championship Success!

Elite equestrian performers from over 300 schools qualified for and then gathered together at Addington Manor in Buckinghamshire for the National Schools Equestrian Association championships over the long weekend of the 24th to the 26th October. The Queen Mary’s Equestrian squad had spent all year competing at qualifying classes and eventually 6 girls and 8 horses were eligible to make the long journey down. Not only were our girls competing against a number of international riders but they were considerably younger than most of the opposition, many of whom were 18 to 19 years old.

Five Queen Mary’s girls took part in the annual Young Musicians of the Year competition held at Holy Trinity Church, Ripon on the 17th and 18th October.

Adjudicated by Clive Harries, a well-known Associated Board examiner and all-round musician, the contest was open to anyone up to the age of 18 who lives or studies within 15 miles of Ripon.

Queen Mary’s was delighted to welcome the Vacation Orchestra (VaCo) to the school to run a workshop with Key Stage 2.

With a 12 piece orchestra including the Flute, Oboe and Double Bass, the young musicians presented their instruments to the girls to allow them to experience the breadth of instruments available to them at Queen Mary’s. Playing pieces from the Musicians of Bremen originally written by the brothers Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm, the children were able to sing along and participate in the story. Anna Staveley on Cello (Year 8) and Arabella Jaques on Violin (Year 5) were kindly invited to participate within the orchestra to give them the fantastic experience of playing along with a top class orchestra!

93.10% Pass Rate at Queen Mary's Once Again

Queen Mary’s School, Topcliffe is once again jumping for joy after receiving this year’s exceptional GCSE results. The independent girls’ school achieved a fantastic 93.10% A* – C pass rate for those who sat 5 GCSEs or more. Many departments within the school including Science and Languages are celebrating a 100% pass rate with several achieving 70% or more A*/A grades..

After a year of academic change within the school, the number of A*/A grades over all academic disciplines increased to 49.2%, which is up nearly 10% on last years results.

KS3 transformed into fantastical felines!

During last week, the girls of Year 7, 8 and 9 were transformed into a stunning array of felines for the musical ‘Cats’.

Mr Mistoffelees and friends took over the Great Hall belting out classic numbers such as Memories, whilst creeping around the stage in cat-like disguise. Flora Grafton’s performance as Grizabella the Glamour Cat, ensured there wasn’t a dry eye in the house, but we were soon perked up again by Libby and Georgia’s dancing display as Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer as mischievous burgling cats!

Queen Mary’s is exceptionally proud of two of our Year 8 & 9 parents, Mrs Grafton and Mrs Patrick who are taking part in the Coast to Coast charity walk. On 30th April, they will be leaving St Bees in Cumbria to walk for 11 long days to reach Robin Hood’s Bay in Yorkshire, covering around 20 miles each day. They are walking to raise money for PPR brain tumour foundation and also Hearing Dogs – both of which make a huge difference to people locally.

Queen Mary’s is delighted to invite Paul Rafferty to officially open this one of a kind W.O.L.F Run this Sunday at 2pm!

Paul is the founder and Chief Executive of MBCUK, a nationally recognised awarding body for mountain bike coach-leader awards. Outdoor education is a foundation of Paul’s personal interests as he was a Top 20 Finisher in the London Marathon and most recently was a World Championship Ironman qualifier to name but a few of his accolades!
