On entrance to Queen Mary’s, every pupil is put into one of the school’s four houses which are named after the local abbeys: Byland, Fountains, Jervaulx and Rievaulx. This is a vertical house system, involving children from Year 3 to Year 11 (S3). Friendly house rivalry is encouraged through the numerous inter-house activities including general knowledge quizzes, outdoor education challenges, music competitions, sports fixtures and fundraising events.
Within each House two S3 pupils are nominated as Head of House and Deputy. There are regular house meetings during which time pupils of varying age groups will work together to support their House.
One of the most anticipated events of the house competition year is the annual Fashion Show. This year's themes were the 1920s, 40s, 60s and 80s, with each house producing and directing their own show.
