UK All Girls School, Queen Mary’s, Announces the Winners of the Fabulous House Music Competition 2025
Queen Mary’s School was alive with excitement, energy and exceptional musical talent as pupils took to the stage for the highly anticipated House Music Competition 2025. This much-loved annual event is a highlight of the school calendar, bringing together singers, instrumentalists and ensembles from across the year groups to celebrate the joy of music in schools and the strength of our vibrant performing arts community.
The atmosphere in the hall was electric as each house showcased their finest performances. Girls presented a diverse range of vocal and instrumental pieces, demonstrating remarkable confidence, musicality and creativity. From expressive solo vocals to polished ensemble playing, the competition displayed the impressive depth of music education at Queen Mary’s and the supportive environment in which every pupil is encouraged to shine.

A special congratulations goes to Annie (Year 5), who was named Best Overall Performer for her captivating rendition of The Moon and Me from The Addams Family musical. Her performance displayed exceptional control, expression and stage presence – the qualities we strive to nurture through our rich programme of singing lessons, school choir opportunities and instrumental tuition.
But the biggest celebration of the day belonged to Rievaulx, who were crowned overall winners of the House Music Competition 2025! Their collective spirit, hard work and musical commitment earned them the top spot, and their triumph was met with huge cheers from pupils and staff alike. Events like this not only highlight the incredible standard of music-making within the school but also reflect the teamwork and leadership skills fostered through our House system and creative arts provision.
A Celebration of Performing Arts in Schools
We were honoured to welcome guest judge Edward Seymour, whose expertise and encouraging feedback inspired performers across all houses. His thoughtful insights highlighted the technical skill, expressive performance and impressive stagecraft displayed by our young musicians.

Behind the scenes, the event was made possible thanks to the dedication of our music department and our hardworking 2025 House Captains, who motivated their teams, supported rehearsals and ensured every pupil felt confident stepping onto the stage. Their leadership reflects the core values of Queen Mary’s: teamwork, kindness and giving every pupil opportunities to grow through the arts.
The House Music Competition plays a key role in enriching performing arts in schools, offering pupils opportunities to perform regularly, develop resilience, and gain confidence in front of an audience. Whether singing solo, performing with the school choir, or playing in instrumental groups, pupils benefit enormously from being part of such a creative and supportive musical community.

Music in Schools: The Importance of Music in Education
At Queen Mary’s, we believe that music plays a vital role in education, enriching pupils’ development far beyond the classroom. Learning music builds confidence, creativity, and self-expression, offering children a powerful way to explore their emotions and communicate without words. It strengthens key cognitive skills such as memory, concentration, and problem-solving, while also supporting literacy and numeracy through rhythm, pattern, and listening. Whether singing in a choir, playing an instrument, or composing their own pieces, pupils gain a sense of accomplishment and joy that enhances their overall wellbeing.
Music also fosters community and connection within a school. Shared musical experiences, such as performances, ensembles, or simply singing together, teach teamwork, discipline, and empathy. They create opportunities for pupils of all ages and abilities to collaborate and celebrate each other’s talents. By placing music at the heart of education, schools nurture confident, resilient learners who appreciate culture, creativity, and the value of working together.
Learning, practicing, and performing music is also great for the soul. Creativity and setting time aside for hobbies is incredible for maintaining positive mental health and allows time for mindfulness, relaxation, and screen-free time. The added benefit of learning a skill helps builds a sense of achievement, self-worth and pride, which contributes further to nurturing the whole child. Being able to sing or play an instrument is a hobby and skill for life – something that can be enjoyed both individually and socially into old age, which is why Queen Mary’s has maintained it through recent years as an integral part of our well-rounded curriculum.
