Queen Mary’s School Celebrates Its First Ever Founders’ Day
This year marked a truly historic moment in the life of Queen Mary’s School as we celebrated our very first Founders’ Day, a new annual tradition introduced following last year’s centenary celebrations. The occasion provides a special opportunity for the whole school community to reflect on the history, values and enduring strength that have shaped Queen Mary’s for generations.

Founders’ Day is a moment to pause and recognise the stability and vision that have underpinned the School since its earliest beginnings – offering a trusted foundation for girls to grow, learn and thrive. It is a celebration not only of where Queen Mary’s has come from, but also of the community that continues to carry its legacy forward with pride and purpose.
101 Years of Queen Mary’s School
Founded on 5 May 1925 at Duncombe Park, Queen Mary’s began with just 23 pupils. From these small beginnings, the School has grown into a thriving and dynamic all-girls environment. In 1931, the School became officially known as Queen Mary’s with the permission of King George V and Queen Mary, marking an important step in its development and identity. Later, in 1985, the School moved to its current home at Baldersby Park, where it continues to flourish today.

Throughout its history, Queen Mary’s has remained firmly committed to providing exceptional all-girls’ education – a commitment that remains at the heart of everything we do. Founders’ Day is a celebration of that enduring mission and the generations of pupils, staff and families who have contributed to the School’s story.
A particularly special moment in this year’s celebrations was the return of Old Maryan Abi Briggs, who kindly shared her memories of her time at Queen Mary’s. Her visit served as a powerful reminder of the lasting bonds formed at the School and the strength of the Old Maryan community. Alumnae continue to support, inspire and champion one another long after they leave, demonstrating the lifelong impact of a Queen Mary’s education.

As we reflect on our history, we also look firmly to the future. Queen Mary’s is proud to be a modern, bold and ambitious girls’ school, where tradition and innovation sit side by side. We honour the values on which the School was founded while continuing to evolve, ensuring every girl is empowered with the confidence, skills and independence she needs for life beyond Queen Mary’s.

Our first Founders’ Day has set the tone for a new tradition – one that celebrates our heritage while looking forward with optimism and ambition. It is a reminder that while times may change, the spirit of Queen Mary’s remains constant: a place where girls are inspired to thrive, lead and make their mark on the world.
