Celebrating International Women’s Day: Accelerating Action for Equality

Ahead of International Women’s Day on March 8 March, our Assistant Head of Prep and Pre-Prep, Mr. Nellis, took the opportunity to engage with our pupils about the significance of this day and the 2025 theme: Accelerate Action. The session served as a powerful reminder of why it’s so important to not only celebrate the progress we’ve made but also continue striving for a more equal world.
Our pupils learned about the origins of International Women’s Day, first celebrated in 1911 across Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. They explored the brave efforts of suffragists and suffragettes, including Emmeline Pankhurst, who fought tirelessly for women’s right to vote. They discovered how Emmeline’s bold leadership and Millicent Garrett Fawcett’s peaceful approach each played a vital role in shaping history.
While much progress has been made, we also discussed the ongoing need to accelerate action in addressing the gender pay gap and ensuring equal rights for women worldwide, including in places like Afghanistan, where women face severe restrictions. Our pupils were inspired to understand that change is possible, but it requires continuous effort, determination, and collaboration.
In celebration of International Women’s Day, we were delighted to welcome back some of our alumnae, who are now leaders in their respective fields. We are grateful for their return to Queen Mary’s to share their valuable insights and advice, serving as powerful role models for our students.
Additionally, we celebrated the achievements of our current pupils, who are actively developing vital leadership skills. Each week, we recognise a Woman of the Week at Queen Mary’s, highlighting accomplishments and personal growth. This week, we celebrated our Football Team, who competed in the regional cup for the first time.

Our Woman of the Week recognition reflects our pupils’ unwavering commitment to excellence in academics, the arts, service, and sports, alongside the dedication of our inspiring educators who nurture their talents. Queen Mary’s is committed to empowering young women to pursue their passions, building confidence, resilience, teamwork, and leadership skills that will serve them well throughout their lives.
We are immensely proud of all our pupils and look forward to celebrating their continued success throughout the academic year.
