Black History Month
During October Queen Mary’s marked Black History Month. During this time, they explored the theme: ‘The Commonwealth’.
The theme was inspired by the regular mention of the Commonwealth in the media. Pupils learnt about what the Commonwealth is, its historical ties to the British Empire and what the Commonwealth means to different people around the world. They explored which countries form the commonwealth; what pushes countries to join or leave and discussed the positive aspects of the Commonwealth today.
In addition to this focus, each form class looked at Black History and learned about significant contributions made by Black people in Britain and around the world.
We also welcomed Betty Owino, a parent, to present a wonderful assembly about growing up in Africa and her experience moving to England. The girls were able to ask lots of great questions.
