Educational Trips This Term: Queen Mary’s Learning Brought to Life!

This Autumn Term, Our All Girls School in Yorkshire Has Been Filled with Trips to Take Learning Beyond the Classroom

This term has been filled with exciting opportunities for pupils across Queen Mary’s School to step outside the classroom and into the wider world. From ancient history and coastal geography to marine science and equestrian biomechanics, our students have experienced learning in new and inspiring ways. These trips are more than just days out — they are a core part of our mission to deliver Her Best Day Every Day, where curiosity drives discovery and learning becomes truly unforgettable.

Queen Mary’s Girls School Senior School Adventures

Our Years 7-11 Have Enjoyed Learning Outside the Classroom This Term

Our Senior School pupils kicked off the term with an immersive journey into the world of medicine. Year 10 Scientists visited the Thackray Museum, where they stepped into the shoes of pioneers who shaped the future of healthcare. With hands-on interactives and eye-opening exhibitions, the girls explored medical breakthroughs across the ages and developed a deeper appreciation for the science that saves lives today.

Meanwhile, our Humanities and Art pupils enjoyed a vibrant day in York, making powerful links between culture, geography and creativity. From visiting York Mosque and understanding faith in our communities, to exploring flood defences at the Foss Barrier, the day blended curriculum learning with real-world insight. Their artistic talents were also sparked with workshops and a visit to the Aesthetica Art Prize exhibition, which was a brilliant way to visualise the role of art in society.

For Year 9, STEM learning leapt off the page with a spectacular two-stop trip. Beginning at the Sea Life Centre, pupils uncovered the science behind marine ecosystems, investigating how engineering and environmental care work hand in hand to protect underwater life. They continued to Scarborough STEM Week, meeting innovators shaping the future of technology and discovering pathways into industries powered by scientific problem-solving. Empowering girls to engineer the future — that’s what Queen Mary’s is all about.

Our older geographers in Years 10 and 11 ventured to Hornsea to study coastal defences in action. Seeing sea walls, groynes and rock armour up close helped them grasp the complexities of erosion management and encouraged critical thinking about how best to protect our coastline. Practical fieldwork enriches classroom theory, and this trip delivered exactly that.

Prep School Explorations at Our North Yorkshire Independent School

Queen Mary’s Prep pupils have also taken huge strides into the past, and also beneath the sea!

Year 6 travelled through both the English Civil War and World War II this term. At Newburgh Priory, where it’s believed Oliver Cromwell may be buried, history came alive through artefacts and storytelling. Their learning continued at Eden Camp, where life on the Home Front and the importance of remembrance helped them reflect on personal bravery and sacrifice.

Our equestrians enjoyed a truly unique outing to Horses Inside Out, investigating how anatomy and biomechanics shape every movement in the saddle — a perfect blend of sport and science.

The younger Prep pupils have been equally busy. Years 1 & 2 dived into ocean habitats at the Sea Life Centre whilst Year 3 explored Stump Cross Caverns, discovering fossils and geological wonders hidden beneath the earth’s surface. Year 4 experienced rainforest heat at Tropical World before identifying living creatures in Roundhay Park and finally, Year 5 visited Harewood House to explore WWI, even planting bulbs in a heartfelt act of community spirit.

Every experience deepened understanding and sparked excitement for learning.

The children also enjoyed nature through a magical visit to Mrs Bourne-Arton’s Flower Farm inspired creativity with flower crowns, orchard picnics and apple picking as well as an enchanting Autumn walk at Studley encouraged close observation of seasonal changes and local wildlife.

Finally, the boys and girls in pre-prep enjoyed a trip to the Yorkshire Showground, where they learned all about apples, as part of an Autumn and Harvest topic. They were immersed in a range of apple activities from baking to juicing and even practising money skills in the farm shop.
