Pre-Prep Curriculum

A happy, homely, caring atmosphere that is educationally stimulating, challenging and exciting.

Our hands-on curriculum sparks a lifelong relationship with learning that is exciting and fun. We aim to ignite your child’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and build his/her capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive.

Through theme-based learning your child’s journey will begin with a focus on four specific areas: Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design.

Focuses

We place a strong emphasis on phonics, reading using schemes including the Oxford Reading Tree, writing, arithmetic and investigative skills and will introduce your child to a wide range of subjects including French and Computing.

There is also time devoted to designing, creating and composing in Art, Design Technology and Music taught through the Kodaly method. Your child will have regular Sports lessons making the most of Queen Mary’s superb facilities including weekly Swimming and use of the astro pitches and gymnasium. Sports Day is a competitive opportunity in the Summer Term and we have galas and fixtures against other schools throughout the school year.

A Cross-Curricular Approach

To bring learning to life we deliver an inspiring curriculum using theme-based or question-based learning each half term. The curriculum is then enriched through many real experiences. Whether our pupils become monks for a day at Fountains Abbey or visit The Deep, these experiences inspire them on their return to the classroom.

Specialist Staff

Alongside our highly-experienced teachers who provide continuity throughout the day, additional support is also on hand from subject specialist teachers and teaching assistants who support and extend your child’s learning further.

Outdoor Learning

Set within 40 acres of beautiful gardens, woodland, play areas and outdoor classroom spaces, Queen Mary’s Pre-Preparatory School takes advantage of the setting with many outdoor learning opportunities from outdoor Mathematics Challenges and French games in the playground to trips on the river and in the woods.

Your Child as an Individual

Children in the Pre-Prep receive a great deal of individual attention. We hear them read individually almost every day. The small class sizes, individual work and nurturing culture throughout the Queen Mary’s community build the foundations for academic excellence, integrity, kindness and respect.

Feedback and Reporting

We aim to develop a working partnership with you with regular informal and formal feedback and reporting. As well as parent consultations your child will receive pupil profiles each term and teachers are open and ready to chat through any questions you may have day by day.

We have an exceptional Support for Learning Department.
